About the lab

Half of the world’s population now lives in cities, and by 2050, nearly 70% of the global population will be urbanized. Cities are key to addressing some of the most urgent sustainability challenges of our time. By rethinking how we design and plan urban environments, we can shape urban areas that are more livable and resilient to climate.

At the Yale Livable City Lab, we explore how the design and planning of urban areas affect everyday life and long-term sustainability. We study how planning decisions influence mobility, climate risk exposure, patterns of segregation, and social interaction, ultimately shaping human behavior and environmental outcomes.

We integrate large-scale geospatial data with cutting-edge technologies—including natural language processing, computer vision, and sensing—to measure and understand these impacts at scale. We work globally, partnering with cities in North America, Europe, and rapidly urbanizing regions worldwide, and we collaborate closely with local governments and community stakeholders to translate our findings into practical strategies.
